“Kaajal” (1948) was directed by M Sadiq for Ratan pictures, Bombay. This social movie had Suraiyya, Wasti, Jayant, Gope, Cuckoo, Sharda, Ram Kamlani, Ammeer Banu, Nazeer Bedi, Nazeer Kashmiri, Sangeeta, Ameer Ali etc in it.

This movie had nine songs in it. Eight of these songs have already been discussed.

The ninth and final song from this movie was a rare song not available on YT. I had located and uploaded this song some time back. But seeing that this was a rare song, I was waiting for some opportune moment to discuss this song. Seeing that this song has the voice of Ram Kamlani, I was looking for the anniversaries of Ram Kalani, but they are seemingly not available. The female singer’s name is mentioned as S Hamida that creates a doubt in mind whether she is different from Hamida Bano (whose anniversary details are known to me).. Theere were two lyricists in this movie (D N Madhok and Shakeel Badayuni)but their work distribution in this movie is not known. Music was composed by Ghulam Mohammad and his anniversaries are nowhere close.

Under these circumstances, I thought I may just as well discuss this song instead of waiting interminably for a suitable occasion which may never come.

So here is this song from “Kaajal” (1948) which is sung by S Hamida (?), Ram Kamlani and chorus.

Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to say how and on whom this song was picturised.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of this singer described as S Hamida in the HFGK.

Today (14 november 2014) is the birth anniversary of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru (14 november 1889-27 may 1964), India’s first Prime Minister. This day is celebrated in India as Children’s day.

To my mind, every day in the year should be Children’s day (and also Women’s day, if you ask me :) And by extension, pets’ day too for those who keep pets. :)

Here is just the song for the occasion. This nice and hummable song is sung by Manna Dey, Rafi and Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Pran, Anwar Hussain and Ajit who sing this song for Baby Rani-who is the Nanha Farishta-baby Angel, in this movie called “Nanha Farishta”(1969).

The title song of this movie was quite popular during its time, but I had never heard this particular song before. when I heard this song, I found it quite a moving song and a song with a message and wondered who the lyricist was. The lyricist is none other than Sahir Ludhiani, of course !

Kalyanji Anandji is the lyricist.

WAR AGAINST CORRUPTION IS THE MOTHER OF ALL WARS

The observations made by the Supreme Court of India :
Corruption is opposed to democracy and social order, being not only anti people, but aimed and targeted against them. It effects the society and destroys the cultural heritage. Unless nipped in the bud at the earliest, it is likely to cause turbulence – shaking the socio-economic-political system in an otherwise healthy, wealthy, effective and vibrant society.

Good observation by all means. But it is not dated, even if the date is known, it could not have been before the start of corruption in India. It is talking of ‘nipping in the bud’. When exactly was corruption in this country at such a delicate initial stage to be called a bud ? Certainly the event took place much before our life time or the life time of anyone I know.

Yes I agree that war against corruption is the mother of all wars. But around me I see only the children of this mother taking place. There is war against all that is decent in society. There is an all out war against human values. I am not being an alarmist. I say this because I am alarmed.

It is a crime in the society to say the truth. Camouflaging the truth has been a tradition long followed and pursued ideologically around us. To be a popular person and perceived as a good person by all, one has to know how to colour the truth. One cannot be a forthright person and be well liked, loved and popular at the same time. It just not happening in this world.

I have seen people who are well liked and respected around me in the family circle in the society I stay and my friends circle and the department. But they invariably turn out to be who know how to change colours as per the situation. In other words they resort to manipulation to turn a given situation to their advantage. This is the most basic level where we are finding the values corrupted. Putting personal benefit ahead on all fronts and one’s own impression in front of someone, yes as basic as that, is the goal of all clever people around me. There are very few who really are so goody goody, that they deserve the popularity and adulation. And those few who are so good as a person inside out are suckers for exploitation. People take them for a ride with panache. It is the easiest job in the world to take unfair advantage of a genuinely good person. For what ? For personal gain. They tell sob stories, resort to emotional blackmail, lie through their teeth, anything and everything to twist and to get monetary benefit and to gain better maneuvering position. A bit more power. I call this corruption at the personal level.

Well said Miyaan Ghalib more than 150 years ago. I have no way of pinpointing the exact date the above shair was written.

I too have read the quote of Mahatma Gandhi :
“ There is enough on this earth for everyone’s need, but not for their greed.”

When will this greed for more of everything from power to money to status will end ? Is there a point somewhere where one will say , ‘Yes this much is enough for me, my family, my future generation, for my city, state and country.”

Are we even aware of the most corrupting factor and the tool which is corrupting the society most ?

It is the philosophy/culture of ‘yeh dil maange more’. It is chill to have the attitude of more is better and forever more is not enough. In terms of fun. It is starting with cold drinks, going on with foreign brand junk food, and to the go on and one. More is better, and larger than life is even better with cricket, TV, movies and more crap which is bought at a premium. From the money which we earn by fair or unfair means. ‘Iss ko lagaa daala to life jhingalala’ is the catch phrase.

Is TV and 24 hours entertainment in 300 channel is really so necessary for our survival? Or is it really taking us back to the era of ‘barbarians’ and stone ages.

In February this year we had arranged some programs and activities to celebrate a special day at the office. An Art Exhibition was also held as one of the events.

I made a display called ‘A mesmerizing game’. It had a central piece of three faced Television monitors in a triangle shape. All three screens showed a chess game in progress, sans players. In other words only the chess board was visible. And surrounding the screens in a circle were various life sketches in B/W of men and women, propped on cardboard sheets.

I was disappointed that very few people saw it and tried to understand what it meant. People invariably commented on the life sketches.

Now that the opportunity has presented itself in this essay, I shall try to explain it:

The television screen(all media to which we are addicted, including social media and print media) is the medium through which a big game of chess is being played by the powers be. And we human are acting as mere puppets and are glued to the game and completely engrossed and mesmerized by it. Thinking it is a intelligent pursuit. We are not even aware that the instead of using the technology as we should being the supreme creation of Almighty God, we are allowing the technology and its gadgets and its puppeteers to control us. We like, dislike, love, eat, bath, work, play and do everything as they want us to do. This is called mind control.

I personally find it very difficult to gauge which is the biggest culprit, the entertainment industry, the print media or the advertising media. It is just impossible to avoid these three powerful media’s which have ‘gheraod’ our lives in the grouse of giving us the entertainment we want, the news and views that we like and the choices we like to make in our spending sprees as a consumer.

To elaborate a little what is being fed to us and our children in the name of entertainment in movies is vulgar and crass. There is hardly anything decent or pure about them. Under the pretext of making money they are destroying the values of younger and older generations alike. What 20 years ago was not acceptable to watch on a late night adult movies is now acceptable for young kids to see and appreciate and even choose the products they want to use in the ads they see while watching a sports channel and cricket match. And I haven’t even touched the ‘hollywood movies’ yet. The hero there is totally dehumanized. Is this entertainment ?

And the less said about the advertising industry the better. It is this huge tool used by the forces who want to misguide the masses, create misconception about what they want and what they should be afraid of and guard against. All this achieved in a seemingly innocuous Baby soap advert or a company dealing in property.

Come on , where have our sensibilities gone ? How we Indians, steeped in religious values, with our rich cultural heritage, the land of sant, mahatma’s and sufi poets have allowed our values to deteriorate to such an extent, that they are not human anymore.

Don’t think that I am digressing from the topic of the essay. I am well on my way.

It is for us educated, thinking, intellectual and capable citizens of this county and the world to go back to our values which our parents taught us and value systems which our great religions have taught. Therein lies the salvation of humanity. To start the mother of all wars we don’t need the arms, weapon of mass destruction or vitriolic propagandas.

We need to learn to be humans first and teach our children the human values and what means to be human. Our children as I see are so enamoured by Hollywood movie characters like Spiderman, He man, Ironman etc. they have forgotten the real life heroes which are human.

I have decoded why it is called the mother of all wars. It has to start in our homes, in our family lives, in our social circle, in our work environment and encompass all spheres of our lives. After all I as a individual make a family with other individuals, a family makes up society with other families in the immediate circle, the circle of extended family and friends make the city, than the state and the country , finally the world.

The above essay is the draft I prepared, as preparation for the essay competition held at my office a few weeks ago. The essay I wrote in the competition though not exactly the same as above won the first prize. The flip side is that there were only five people writing the English essay, so it was no big deal winning the first prize.

One more thing bothering me is that the only person who has read it was the ‘judge ‘. The draft has subsequently been read by a few of my close friends. Fortunately, this can be rectified and the essay can be part of a post, thereby going into the public domain and my views can be read by a wider section of readers.

So here is the essay/draft for the readers of the blog. A few of the reaction I have got are, ‘I read half of it than got distracted’ ‘I was reading it and someone came to see me’ etc. One more interesting response was from my sister, who asked “Is that all or is there more to it ? ” To the last one I replied that “in the actual essay I ended in a different way with more explanations” and to the earlier one’s I told them ‘nothing doing, begin from the beginning” :-) .

This song from the film ‘Nanhe Farishte’ was posted recently. It reminds me once again why children are called ‘nanhe farishte’. Because their hearts are pure as angels. They have not sinned and are in fact pure inside out. The little angels that we are/were proud of, are in fact the roots of human race. And the vulgarity on television and media is destroying the roots of human race. The same obscene advertisements are repeated every few minutes on all TV channels, irrespective of the target audience. Some people argue that it is the requirement of commerce. This argument has far exceeded its justification in my opinion. No one in their right mind can justify the sort of advertisements being shown on sports , children’s, knowledge and education channels. I find it hard to digest the obscenity published daily in the mainstream newspapers, with highest circulations in the country. They have a ‘free magazine supplement’ which is separate from the main newspaper. I told my newspaper vendor that I don’t want the magazine section, he said ‘it is free ‘ it comes with the newspaper. Maybe it is sponsoring the whole newspaper, alongwith the tabloid section.

Here is the song finally which is extolling the greatness of human hands and the capabilities of man kind . It is a nice inspirational, motivating song composed by S. D. Burman. Mohammed Rafi is the singer of this creation written by Kaifi Azmi for the movie “Apna haath jagannath” (1960)

Today (18 november 2014) is the birth anniversary of V Shantaram (18 november 1901- 30 october 1990). On this occasion, here is a song from “Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahaani”(1946). This song is sung by Jayshree and chorus. It is picturised on Jayshree, V Shantaram and others.

Most of us were born in Independent India and we grew up reading about the Independence movement in our textbooks and other publications. These publications informed us that the non violent movement for independence moved the rulers. They saw the errors of their ways and peacefully quit India.

The textbooks also mentioned in passing about some names that believed in non violent ways to achieve independence. Their ways did not achieve much and detracted from the non violent movements, we were told.

As school kids of yore, we were not supposed to think and question, but just accept what was being told. After all, we were a product of the school system that was introduced by our benevolent British rulers and which was faithfully continued even after independence.

Several decades after leaving the school and (hopefully) becoming able to doubt and question, I find several lacunae in the simplistic tale of the struggle for Indian Independence. British did not establish their dominance over the world on the basis of non violence nor did they make their colonies free because of this reason. Examples of their cruelties have been carefully wiped out from history books. Millions of people died in India during several years because foodgrains were not allowed to reach the hungry rather they were shipped outside the country. And these years were described as years of famine in history books.

The systems set by the British, like their police system, education system, law system etc were meant to create people who would unthinkingly serve the cause of the British. And these systems remain in place even today. It is inconceivable but true that we are still following India Penal Code which was framed in 1860, just after 1857 (we know what happened in 1857). To keep things in perspective, British do not have anything even remotely like IPC in their own country. The same can be said about the Indian educational system and the Indian judicial system, among many other systems.

In brief, we have been fed myths instead of real facts about our freedom struggle. The true contributions of people like Subhash Chandra Bose (whose birth anniversary falls today) in the freedom struggle have been sought to be wished away, hoping that people will forget about them with time. But it seems clear that the contribution of Subhash Chandra Bose was extremely vital and crucial in winning Indian independence. The two world wars had weakened British empire financially. Country like India was becoming ungovernable, not just because of the “non violent” non co operation, but also because of the raising of Azad Hind Fauz and other such acts that weakened the authority of British in India. Moreover the public opinion around the world had turned overwhelmingly in favour of granting independence to India.

On the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s 118th birth anniversary today, here is a song from “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose)(1966). This song is sung by Manna Dey. Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

Little is known about this movie which means that this movie sank without a trace, despite boasting of Jubilee Kumar in the star cast.

“Girl Friend”(1960) was directed by Satyen Bose for Basu Chitra Mandir, Bombay and it had Kishore Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Bipin Gupta, Nazeer Hussain, Leela Mishra, Jagdev, Dhumal, Gautam, Keshto, Master Anwar, Daisy Irani etc in it.

This is a movie which has been by and large forgotten.

This movie had six songs in it and most songs from this movie have been forgotten as well. But it is this movie that has this memorable Kishore Kumar-Sudha Malhotra duet namely Kashti kaa khaamosh safar.

Of late, I have discovered (thanks to Avinash Scrapwala) that this movie has some forgotten gems in it that are required to be dug up and presented to music lovers.

Yesterday, we presented one such song from the movie viz. Jhuk jhuk bhoori maa ko karo parnaam (Girl Friend).

Today, we proudly present another forgotten gem from “Girl Friend”(1960).

This song, the fifth song of “Girl Friend”(1960) to appear in the blog is a “paisa” song. It is an instructive song, as well as a song with a message. This song tells us about the history of money, from the barter system to the present currency system, and tells us how human behaviour has undergone a change for the worse thanks to the introduction of money.

This song is sung by Lata, Hemant Kumar, Ranu Mukherji and chorus. The lyrics are penned (unsurprisingly) by Sahir Ludhianvi. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

As with most songs from this movie, only the audio of this song is available, so it is not possible to say how and on whom this song is picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Yes, you are right.  I am trying to start the writing of the post for the very very special occasion of today.  We have touched the next Massive milestone after THE MASSIVE milestone that we hit in July of 2014.  It has taken us eight months and eleven days to reach here.  . . . .Ooooops, I said it, when I was not even intending to say it.  But then the calendar is a calendar and if it has taken eight months and ELEVEN days to reach here, then that is what it is – it HAS taken ELEVEN days + eight months to get to today’s milestone.

I hope you are still with me. :) :)

Haan bhai haan, today’s post is all about ELEVEN.  And for those who are still trying to figure out what I am talking about, well, the blog has arrived at the ELEVEN THOUSANDTH milestone with this post.  By all accounts, a very major event.  And a round of very jovial congratulations to all.

For those of us who were involved with the 10K celebration that hit the online connections on 20th July last year (2014), that event is a memory that can possibly not be surpassed.  The intensity of the buildup, the exhilaration of execution, and the satisfaction and delight of the follow up, which included various get together sessions of the team members – it is all there.  Partially in the emails that flowed across continents that day, partially in the write ups that helped chronicle the MEGA event, and most of all, in the minds and memories of the team members involved.

After having crossed that MEGA milestone, I dare say that the fun and anticipation of arriving at the century landmarks, was probably not that big an event any more.  Some folks even commented that the next great-big-dot-point on this up and up curve is going to be a kilo-jump.  (Note:’kilo’ is the prefix for ‘thousand’ in the metric measurement system.)

So here we are, celebrating the ELEVEN THOUSANDTH song to be posted on this blog.  The movement up and ahead is exhilarating as we are continuing to research, unearth, ferret out and bring to this blog on a daily basis, songs that are familiar, that are unfamiliar, that are rare, that are endearing, and above all they add to this remarkable treasure of Hindi film music, that is most definitely, just one of its kind anywhere in this world, and on the internet.

And so, coming to the thoughts that I had touched upon at the start of this write up.

‘Gyaarah’ is a number very prevalent in the Indian context and has quite a few flavors and uses and idioms associated with it.  The first thought that comes to mind is the auspiciousness.  The tradition in our culture is that anything that is good, we will do more of it, and anything that is not good, we will try to reduce it.  I am sure many of us will be familiar with this tradition.  I can speak from the north India and the Punjabi context.  As we say – “kuchh khushi ka kaam hai, to badhaa ke; kuchh gham ka kaam hai to ghataa ke” (if there is a good and happy occasion, let it be extended and let there be more of it, if there is an unhappy occasion, shorten it and be done with it.)

That is where ‘Gyaarah’ assumes its significance.  When we are preparing to gift something – money or other gift items, generally we round it off to the figure we are comfortable with.  And then we add something to it.  We would like to give ‘ten’, so we increase it to ‘eleven’; we would like to give five hundred, so we increase it to ‘five hundred and one’ or ‘five hundred eleven’.  And thus, eleven, which is one more than ten, becomes a number that represents happiness and auspiciousness.  Today’s milestone is happier and more auspicious as compared to the 10K milestone from July last year.

Maybe that is the thought behind having eleven players in a cricket team.  The enthusiasts can comment on it.  :)

Coming to the second thought that is triggered by ELEVEN.  This thought tells of strength that comes from unity. And this strength is so well manifest on our blog.  Working together, this team has accomplished something that is completely unique and incomparable.  It all comes from working together.  We have an age old idiom that says – ‘ek aur ek gyaarah’ – when two individuals come together, they are not only a pair, but together they can wield the strength of eleven.  The number itself consists of two ‘ones’ and that is possibly the origin of this idiom.

The best song representing this sentiment, that I can recall is the one from the film 1957 ‘Naya Daur’ – “Saathi Haath Badhaana Saathi Re”.  One of the antaraa has the following words

ek se ek mile to katraa ban jaataa hai dariyaa
ek se ek mile to zarraa ban jaataa hai sehraa
ek se ek mile to raayi ban sakti hai parbat
ek se ek mile to insaan bas mein kar le kismet

When two drops of water meet, they make a swirling river
When two motes of dust meet, they grow a sprawling desert
When two seeds of mustard meet, they raise a mighty mountain
When two humans meet, they can can command the destiny

This one is such a emphatic representation of the idiom ‘one and one makes eleven’.

On the lighter side, I also recall another song from the 1972 film ‘Savera’ which goes something like this.  Alternate lines are by the lady and the gentleman, with the lady going first.

Now this gives a totally new dimension to ‘one and one makes eleven’. :D :D
And coming in 1972, I am sure the bureaucrats and the politicians pushing the family planning programs in those years would have fainted on listening to this one.

And now, coming to the third thought that comes when ‘Gyaarah’ is encountered.  Once again, another age old idiom – ‘Nau Do Gyaarah’ (literally nine and two make eleven).  Something to do with disappearing, running away, fleeing etc. etc.  Another link that comes to mind is walking or running.  I don’t know about other parts of the subcontinent, but in the north, the act of ‘walking’ is also called as ‘traveling in bus no. 11’, where the ‘11’ represents the two legs.  So if you do not have any transport available, this ‘bus no. 11’ is always available, and can be utilized free of any charge or fare.  So may be, this idiom that puts together three numbers and says ‘Nau Do Gyaraah’ probably points towards making use of one’s legs and to move away.  The idiom has appeared as the title of two films ‘Nau Do Gyaarah’ in 1957 and later ‘Taxi No. 9-2-11’ in 2006.  This phrase is part of the dialogue in many a hilarious situations, or even some threatening ones.  Quite so.

I am sure by this time you must be wondering when I will ‘9-2-11’ from writing more and letting in some discussion about this special song.

Ah yes, the song.  The song that Atul ji and I have been saving from many centuries – I mean the blog centuries. ;)

Of course the film is ‘Gyaarah Hazaar Ladkiaan’ from 1962, and yes of course, this is the title song of this film.  Once in a life time opportunity maybe.  Where else is it possible to find a song that has a theme that is so very well fitting into the milestone song.  I have tried and tried but have not been able to come up with another song that will fit so well into another century milestone of this blog.  And then some.  Eleven – auspicious, strong and united, and yes, lots of fun too.

I had latched on to this song more than a year ago, and had discussed with Atul ji.  We were waiting for this ELEVEN THOUSANDTH station to come.  Just yesterday, as we were exchanging emails, Atul ji mentioned that this particular trip of the latest 100 songs, that is from 10,901 to 11,000 is the slowest to date – snail paced passage.  We have never spent as many as 38 days in between two century milestones.  ‘Extenuating Circumstances’ – as Anthony Gonsalves (‘Amar, Akbar, Anthony’) would have commented.  But well, all that is now behind us, and we are on to the next wave of one hundred songs.

The lyrics of this song are from the pen of Kaifi Azmi.  Music is by N Datta.  And the singing voice is that of Mahendra Kapoor.  With due deferment to Bharat ji – I hope you will read the post, even if you do not listen to the song. :) :)

The song appears as the title song of the film.  The film starts in a court room.  Mala Sinha has been brought in as an accused in a murder trial.  She does not have a lawyer.  Bharat Bhushan makes a dramatic entry, announcing that he is representing the accused.  The judge asks him whether he is prepared, how will he present his case, and whether he will be bringing in any witnesses.  To the last query, Bharat Bhushan replies that yes, he will be brining in witnesses, lots of witnesses.  In fact “. . .Gyaarah Hazaar. . . Ladkiaan”.  At this point the credits of the films start to roll and this song starts to play in background.

I have not seen the full movie, and so I am not aware of the connection of the number ‘Gyaarah Hazaar’, the story line and the working women of the city of Bombay.  That is what this song tells about, extolling the contributions of the ladies to the professional work forces.

Three songs of this film have already been showcased here.  As I browsed through, I see two notables.  Firstly, the statement that Atul ji made in the very first post of a song from this film “Dil Ki Tamanna Thi Masti Mein”, published way back on 26th December, 2009.  He said, and I quote – “Believe it or not, there was a movie called “Gyaarah hazaar ladkiyaan” (eleven thousand girls).” :D :D

Secondly, all the three posts are short and do not present any details about the film.

But yes, there is information and discussion in the comments area, by our very own in house encyclopedia, our dear Arun ji.  So in the second song posted, “Gham Gaya To Gham Na Kar”, which had lyrics and translations by yours truly, Arun ji had initiated the discussion on this film, with the following synopsis.

GYARA HAZAR LADKIYAN is a misleading title, suggesting that it is about Arabian Night stories or some fantasy film. Far from it, the film was produced by Film Friends, a group of socialistic, left leaning writers and poets, affiliated to IPTA (Indian People Theatre Association), as an attempt to draw attention of the world to the exploitation and tribulations of working women.  The film was co-written and produced by Ali Sardar Jafri and KA Abbas, and was directed by Abbas himself.

Puran (Bharat Bhushan), son of a millionaire, rebels against his capitalist father, leaves home and joins a progressive journal. He writes a series on working girls. In this connection, he meets Asha (Mala Sinha) who is working as a clerk in the rationing office. They meet few times and dutifully fall in love.

Meanwhile, his father pressurises the editor to sack Puran and forces him to return home. Puran refuses and starts his own journal. The Govt. closes Rationing Offices after the war, and Asha loses the job. Her younger sister Uma (Helen) does a job of Dancer in a night club. The owner of the night club tries to take undue advantage of Uma and in the melee, Uma kills him and runs away, to home.  To save her sister, Asha takes the blame and is promptly arrested by the police. Puran, with the help of his reporter friends, finds out the truth and defends Asha in the court. Puran gives very long speeches in the court, throwing light on the exploitation of working women of the world in general, and Bombay in particular and the nightclubs specifically. Asha is set free ” ba izzat ” and the lovers unite under the Red Flag.

The audience who came there looking for entertainment, got a dose of socialism thru lengthy speeches, obviously to their disapproval and the film flopped. The makers of the film, I am sure, must have felt a sense of achievement that they did their duty of teaching the society something important !

To this synopsis, I had put a query to Arun ji, asking him about the significance of the title of the film.  Arun ji responded with the following.

If I remember right, in my childhood, the phrase ‘Gyara Hazar xxxxx’ was being used to express plurality of anything, e.g. gyara hazar bachhe aisa karte hain, Gyara hazar kutte bhonk rahe the etc.  May be, like that this phrase was used to express plurality of working girls – may be.  I lived in a Muslim-Urdu dominated state of Hyderabad where this was commonly used in conversations. Since the producers, director and the story writers were urdu speaking, it is very much possible that the title was used in that context.
This is my take on your query.

So we have an explanation.  Of course, if there are any additional thoughts and information about this film and its title, the readers are welcome to add more.

I am sure by now you ready to say “ye article kuchh gyaarah hazaar . . . . . ho gaya hai” and must be wondering that I promised to be ‘9-2-11’ about five paragraphs ago, and I am still hanging on.  OK, I take the silent hints your are passing my way, and close this write up.

Congratulations to Atul ji, and the entire team.  Today’s milestone is a big one, and we are here, because we are together as a team.  Many more frontiers still to cross.  Let us be ‘ek aur ek gyaarah’ and continue this journey.

PS: Maybe it was actually ‘9-2-10.5’ in the previous paragraph.  I just recalled a recent comment from Mahesh ji, which I must include here.  On January 14th, when we had scaled the 10,700 mark, Mahesh had pointed out towards two very important and interesting milestones coming up.  The first one he mentioned is 11,000th, which is today.  But it is the second one that is more interesting.  He says that he is also waiting for the 11,111th song – that should be made very special for the unique number.  So we are now 110 songs away from that ‘interesting’ milestone pointed out by Mahesh ji.  I am sure it will be another  very special milestone, and a very special song.

Now, truly, I will ‘9-2-11’.

“Ham Ek Hain” (1946), a Prabhat Film Company Limited production, was a movie with a message. in this movie, Durga Khote, a noble widowed matriarch brings up many orphan kids in addition to her own son. These kids are her own son Shankar (Dev Anand), and orphans Yusuf (Rehman), John (Rane) and Durga (Rehana). As can be seen, she is raising three boys of three different religions as her own, plus one girl of low caste , thus sending a strong message of “Ham ek Hain” (We are one).

This movie had many debutants in it. All actors playing Durga Khote’s kids were debutants, as was Kamla Kotnis, who plays Dev Anand’s love interest. P L Santoshi, who wore multiple hats of lyricist, dialogue writer and director, made his directorial debut with this movie.

This story may have inspired countless movies in the coming decades. it was a movie with a strong matriarch, which may have inspired other movie makers of the future to come up with movies of this theme. The movie clearly paves way for future movies with the theme of unity in diversity. “Amar Akbar Anthony” is ae example that readily comes to mind.

Eight songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the ninth song from the movie. This song is a kids’ song which is picturised on kids playing the childhood roles of the four kids that Durga Khote raises as her own. The kids are shows singing this song while crossing a river in a boat. It is interesting to see that the girl does the hard work of rowing the boat for much of the picturisation while the boys just sing. It is towards the end that one kid(playing Dev Anand’s childhood character) takes the “patwaar” to do some symbolic paddling and he then raises the “patwaar” high displaying a flag of unity atop it.

The singers of this song are not known. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify these child voices.

Today’s song is a Parody song, filmed on Mehmood, Aruna Irani and many others, from the film “Main sundar hoon”-1971.

Isak Mujawar was a Film Journalist, Film Historian and an acclaimed author in Marathi. He has written about 30 books in Marathi and just one book in English. This English book,”Maharashtra-The birthplace of Indian Film Industry” was published in 1969. This book is used by British and Australian Universities as a reference book. Copies of this book are not available anymore, but Amazon Ausralia sells this book at Rs. 3500, while the original price was just 50 rupees !

You must be wondering why I am telling all this, instead of discussing the relevant song to be posted today. The reason is- I am a great fan of Isak Mujawar. I have 20 of his books in my library out of the 31 books that he has written. Mujawar recently died on 26th February 2015, at the age of 85 years. He had enjoyed silent films, Talkie films and had very close relations with almost every small and big personality in Marathi and Hindi Film industry.

His books describe incidents and facts which are rarely known to majority and are very interesting. His deep knowledge and intimacy with the cine artistes give us a glimpse into matters which are not well known, but highly informative. In today’s post, I intend to write about actor Mehmood’s early life and things which are hardly known, all based on Mujawar’s article in his book “Cinerang”. My thanks to him.

Ashok Kumar had a lot of connection to Mehmood’s early and later part of career. When Mehmood was 10-12 year old, his father Mumtaz Ali was a Choreographer, actor and dancer in Bombay Talkies. Mehmood used to go to the studio almost daily. In 1943, when film KISMET was being made, it was Mehmood who did the role of Ashok Kumar’s childhood. In a way, it was the begining of Mehmood’d career.

When film SHIKARI-46 was made in Filmistan, the film had a few scenes involving children. Those days Kishore Kumar, Mehmood and his sister Minoo Mumtaz took part in these scenes. They were young and their names were not known names in those days. In the film also, their original names were used and in one scene Ashok Kumar calls them,”chalo, Kishore, Mehmood, Minoo, chalo mere saath”. When this film came for a re-run in the 60-61 period, these three were quite well known in films. When that scene came on the screen, audience used to clap when Ashok kumar took their names on the screen !

In 1957, Ashok Kumar acted in the film Mr X . In this film there were a few scenes where Ashok had to remain in Burkha, as he was supposed to be invisible. Actually Ashok Kumar never did those scenes. It was Mehmood in the Burkha as Ashok Kumar. Those days Mehmood was an Extra.

In 1960, Mehmood did the role of Ashok Kumar’s son in the film KANOON. In the same year, he did villain’s role in Ashok Kumar’s film KALA AADMI. Later in 1973 also, Mehmood did Ashok kumar’s son’s role in the film DO PHOOL-73.

When KISMET-43 was made, film BASANT was also being made simultaneously in Bombay Talkies on another floor. Madhubala was doing a child role in this film. Raibahadur Chunilal’s son Madan Mohan, Madhubala, Kishore and Mehmood used to pay together in the studio compound. They used to play a game of marriage. Kishore and Mehmood used to make Madan Mohan and Madhubala the Bride and Groom and the marriage would take place, as any other normal children’s play.

Madhubala became a Heroine in 1947 in NEEL KAMAL. After MAHAL-49, she became famous, but Mehmood was nowhere. He was P L Santoshi’s driver. Once on the sets of film NADAAN-51, Mehmood- who was present at the shooting- got a role opposite Madhubala and spoke a few lines. This was his first Adult role as an Extra ! Later Mehmood was driver of Shakti Samanta and also of Guru Dutt. Shakti Samanta featured him in films BAHU-55, INSPECTOR-56 and HOWRAH BRIDGE- 58 ( he did a Bhangda dance with his own sister Minu). Guru Dutt gave him roles in C I D and PYAASA. Guru Dutt had recognised his Comical Talent and annonced a film DHANDHORA, with Mehmood as a Hero. This was to be a remake of earlier hit film DHANDHORA- 41. acted and Directed by another legend N.M.Charlie . Unfortunately, like many of his announcements, this too remained only on paper.

However, mehmood did N M Charlie’s role in the film “DUNIYA KA MELA-74”. This was a remake of the Debut film of Nargis TAQDEER-42. Charlie was father of Nargis in this film. Mehmood became father of Rekha in DUNIYA KA MELA-74.

When Mehmood was working as an extra, many times he used to borrow money from actor Yakub. He too used to oblige Mehmood every time. However when Yakub was in his twilight zone of career, he could not give Mehmood any money which he asked,but he said, “today I cant give you money, but I will pay you in another way some other time”. Yakub died in 1958. In 1963 a film GHAR BASA KE DEKHO was being made. This was actually a remake of Yakub’s film GRIHASTHI-48. Mehmood had the same role as Yakub did. That time Mehmood remembered Yakub’s last words to him. Before doing the make up for the shooting, Mehmood visited the grave of Yakub, put a Rose and then came back for shooting !

Sometimes, when the film becomes old, an extra song or a scene is added to it and the film again attracts crowds who are curious to see that extra addition to the movie. Mehmood is the only comedian who has this honour. From 1960 to 1980, Mehmood was in Top form and his scenes were a must in almost every film. Film AARTI-62 was a successful hit film. However, after a few months, Mehmood’s comedy scenes were shot and added to the film to continue its popularity.

Finally, in an informal chat in 1984, Ashok Kumar was asked who, according to him, was the best actor of that time. Ashok Kumar,without hesitation, said, “among the present day crop of actors, I don’t find anyone who can surpass Mehmood in acting.” Coming from Ashok Kumar,this was certainly the most appreciative remark for Mehmood !

The film MAIN SUNDAR HOON-71 was made by A.V.M. Madras and was directed by Krishnan-Panju. Music was by Shankar-Jaikishen. Lyricist was Anand Bakshi. The cast was Mehmood, Biswajeet, Leena Chandavarkar, David,Mukri etc etc. The story of the film is….

Sunder (Mehmood) works in a hotel owned by Ram Swarup (David Abraham) as a waiter. He is a very funny, uneducated man, with a suitably funny face, opposite to his name. Radha (Leena Chandavarkar) is the daughter of Ram Swarup. She often comes to the hotel, and Sunder happens to meet her and amuse her with funny jokes. One day, in a casual remark, she says,”I like your innocence”. He does not understand the word ‘innocence’, and thinks that she likes him. He also likes her, but is afraid to tell her, as he works in her father’s hotel.

Then, he seeks help from his friend, Amar (Biswajeet). He helps him get work in film industry. And in no time, Sunder emerges as leading comic actor. But in this duration, Amar, ignorant about his friend’s love, and Radha fall in love. When he knows that Sunder’s love is Radha, he asks Radha, who says that she never loved Sunder. Amar stops Sunder multiple times from expressing his feelings to Radha, thinking that the truth will break down Sunder.

During his stardom days, he once performs at a charity show for orphan children. He gets emotional seeing the children, and decides to stay a day longer, and in the process, misses his father’s death ceremony at his home. Her mother asks him to be with her in her last moments. And he promises to.

One day, during an interview to the All India Radio, he says that he likes to have his old dress of the waiter in front of him, so that it could remind him of what he was earlier, and he does not develop any pride. And in the same interview, he says that he is going to marry someone he loves. Amar and Radha listen to this on the radio. Knowing that Sunder will come to express his love to her, Radha urges Amar to tell him the truth, but he says, he is unable to do so. Sunder comes, and Radha tells her the truth. Heartbroken, Sunder wishes for his friend, and Radha.

Then, one day, he goes for the shooting of the climax of a film, whose date of release has come very near. The producer says to his guard that nobody, in any circumstance could disturb them. And back home, his mother falls down the stairs. She is rushed to the hospital. She wants to see her son, so, a man is sent to call him, but the guard does not allow him in. Instead, he himself goes to get some good medication. Sunder, after finishing the work, comes to know about the accident, and rushes away. But he finds her dead. He repents being a celebrity.

Amar and Radha marry. At that ceremony, Sunder comes in his old dress, of a waiter. He says, he will no longer work in films, as that life is unreal. He will meet his mother now onwards, by helping poor and orphan children.

Hindi film songs have been influenced by music from various genres. That is good. Some songs are ‘inspired’- a euphemism for generously borrowing. Well, it should have been better effort. Some after getting inspiration are better than the original pieces. That is something. I would cite ‘Kaun hai jo sapnon me aya..’ from ‘Jhuk Gaya Asmaan’ which was inspired by Elvis Presely’s ‘Marguerita’

However some are unapologetic carbon copies.Ugh ?

Then there are other instances of two stalwarts getting ‘inspired ‘by same track around same time and they come out with the ‘inspired’ song independent of each other. Remember ‘Jumma Chumma’ from ‘Hum’ & ‘Tamma Tamma’ from ‘Thanedar’ inspired by Mori Kante’s ‘Tama tama’? There other instances. Let me not stretch.

Today’s song is, in one part, inspired by western song ‘Sixteen tons’(1956) sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. This song is combined with an Indian tune, in other part. This complete song is from the film ‘Heera Moti’. (1959). Some songs from ‘Heera Moti’ are already covered, including its story.

Another stalwart who was inspired by same track is S D Burman whose Kishore Kumar sung song was a chart buster. No prizes for guessing.
Today’s song, independently heard, unaware of the ‘inspiration’, sounds a good mix. The borrowed tune is interestingly sung by Gulam Mohammad. Music is by Roshan. Lyrics are by Prem Dhawan.

Additional note from Atul:
The movie was based on “Do Bailon Ki Katha”, a story by Munshi Premchand. The story was about Heera and Moti, two bulls of a villager and was written from the point of view of the bulls. But the movie version by and large reduced this movie to a story told from the point of view of humans and in the process the movie became another “Do Beegha Zameen” kind of movie.

This song was perhaps the only portion of the movie that told the tale from the point of view of the bulls. This song was “lip synced” by Heera and Moti, the two bulls, in the movie. :)

Missing Films of 1960s – 11

I am supposed to be moving ahead from ‘Mall Road’ (1962), the previous post in this series. But no. Today, I return to another earlier movie that was missing, but now is no longer missing.  I bring a song from a rare film ‘Bapu Ne Kaha Tha’.

This film is produced by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). This is one of those films that are not easily available.  I had tried earlier, and then marked it down as ‘unavailable’, for now. I had even checked the CFSI website, but did not find anything more than a brief synopsis. I had sent them an email request for availability information about this and a couple of other CFSI films. I received no response.

However, just the day before, I received a disk from another collector friend, which contains this film. I was overjoyed and very pleasantly surprised. I quickly played it and viewed it. As the name suggests, this film is about a group of children in a village, and the message of Gandhi ji regarding being truthful in life. The very special thing about this film is that the renowned Shri Morarji Desai (1896 – 1995) makes an appearance in this film. He plays himself in person, and presents a short narration about Gandhi ji’s life and message, to the children, at a function organized at the school.

The story of this film is about a dishonest money lender (role played by Nana Paksikar) who gets blank papers signed by un-lettered farmers, when he lends them money.  At a later time, he fills in the blank paper with incorrect content, and exploits the farmers to grab their land.  His school going son (role played by child artist Satish) is a good hearted child, but also, being a child, he is active with the other naughty children in his class, as in running away while the classes are in progress, and stealing fruits from the orchards of other farmers in the village.

His elder sister (role played by Neena), who is married, is visiting when the episodes in this film take place. While playing with fireworks, the children become inadvertently responsible to burn down the hutment home of a farmer. They hide the true reason and put the blame elsewhere. The farmer comes to the moneylender to borrow money to rebuild his home. The transaction takes place in front of the money lender’s son.

Shri Morarji Desai visits the school and the son is influenced by hearing about Gandhi ji and his message. At a little later point in time, circumstances so transpire that the moneylender grabs the land of the farmer, based on incorrect statements entered on the blank paper the latter had put his thumbprint to. The matter goes to the panchayat at the protest of the farmer, but based on the document, and other arguments given by the moneylender, the panchayat passes the matter in his favor. The son, who was silent so far, is aghast and is torn between telling the truth and going against his own father. Circumstantially, he ends up revealing the truth to his elder sister, who now encourages him to stand by the truth, and the teachings of Gandhi ji.

The money lender defies all efforts to now make him change his mind.  At this point, the brother sister do a sit in protest (‘satyagrah’ – an insistence on the truth), on the very land of the aggrieved farmer. All the children of the village join their school mate, as do some of the elders. Their protest continues for a full day and night. By dawn next day, the moneylender, so disturbed by the revelations of the truth by his own son, and the fact that his children are not coming home in protest, has a change of heart, and announces the return of land to the farmer. This is the story of film in a nutshell.

This song is the solitary song in this film. However, it appears at three time points in the film. The first is when the son returns from the function at school after hearing Shri Morarji Desai, and tells his sister about it. The second part appears when the children are sitting on protest. And the third time, it appears at the end of the film – it is the day of Diwali, all matters are settled and all are friendly once again.

I have edited the film to extract the three parts, and combined them in a single upload.  The lyrics given below are for all the three parts. The song is written by Bharat Vyas, and the music is composed by Avinash Vyas. The singing voices are not listed in the initial credits. I can identify Manna Dey’s and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. I hope I am correct. I request other friends and readers to please correct in case I am wrong. Also, there is definitely one more voice (possibly two) in this song, that I have not been able to identify. Again, request to other friends and readers to please add more information on this aspect.

The cast of actors includes Nana Palsikar, Neena, Majnu, Kesri, Jankidas, Narmada Shankar, Satish, Munshi Munakka, Jugal Kishore, Sandeep, Rajendra Dubey, Baby Shobha, Levi, Jatendra, Amir Hazma, Nazeera Bai besides others.

These films from CFSI from that era depict a very innocent and a very simple India, especially rural India. The people are simple, with simple motivations and simple desires. Such films were regular products of CFSI.  The organization still continues to produced films for children, but I have not seen any of their later and current films.  I am sure, with the changing times, we can expect some changes in such films also.  But the films from CFSI, from the 50s, 60s and 70s, that I have seen, really impressed me a lot, when I initially saw them, and even now when I am revisiting them. It was a time when the luminaries of the industry worked with CFSI to produce some real good films. In the recent months, I have re-seen films like ‘Jawab Aayega’ (1968), ‘Jaldeep’ (1956), ‘Jaadu Ka Shankh’ (1975), ‘Boond Boond Se Sagar’ (1963), and now ‘Bapu Ne Kaha Tha’ (1962). Wonderful memories of a child, all of them. (Still searching for some other titles like ‘Hariya’ (1958) and ‘Hamen Khelne Do’ (1962).

The on screen performance of this song.  Part 1 of the song is enacted by the sister (Neena) and brother (Satish), in their home.  Part 2 is enacted in the farmer’s field. There is a group of children, classmates of the boy. Among them, the tallest child with a plump face is Rajendra Dubey. Regulars may recall his face from the song “Chhota Sa Pappu Hoon” from the film ‘Jaldeep’, that I have posted earlier. The child girl in this group is Baby Shobha. In this part, the Manna Dey lines are enacted by the aggrieved farmer. My guess here is that this actor is Jugal Kishore. Nana Palsikar is also present in this clip. Also, I am sure, regulars will spot the smiling plump face of Leela Misra, in a framed photograph on the wall, in one of the scenes.  In Part 3, the Manna Dey lines are enacted by Narmada Shankar, who is the schoolmaster of the village school in the film. Others faces in Part 3 are Nana Palsikar, Jankidas, Jugal Kishore, Majnu, and many more that I am not able to identify.

Listen and view these sounds and images of a relatively uncomplicated and simpler times in our history. Enjoy.

Ah yes, you notice that I skipped the vowel ‘ई’ and jumped straight to the vowel ‘उ’. The reason is that in all the film and non film songs that I could access and check, all songs starting with ‘ई’ have already been posted. With its typical usage profile in the language, there are very few songs that start with words that start with ‘ई’ in Rafi Sb’s list of songs. So I move on to the next vowel in sequence.

The young Rafi’s singing for films started in 1941, when he was merely 17 years old.  Music director Shyam Sunder was preparing the music for the Punjabi film ‘Gul Baloch’. He had heard about Rafi, and he brought him in, giving him his debut as a singer in films. The young man recorded a duet with Zeenat Begum – “Soniye Nee, Heeriye Nee”. This song, by some accounts, became very popular in Punjab.  The film itself got delayed and was eventually released in 1944.

Taking a reference from the previous article in this series, I want to acknowledge a significant correction to the detail contained therein, and I thank our dear Arun ji for the correction. Hamid Bhai, the person whose efforts it were to get the young boy Mohammed trained and gain exposure to other artists, was not the real elder brother. He was a family friend, who was impressed by the young boys artistic potential, and took pains to ensure and enable the right path for him. Once the song recorded for the Punjabi film caught the attention of listeners, it was Hamid Bhai who convinced the family to permit young Mohammed to travel to Bombay and seek a future for himself in the Hindi film industry.

With references from well wishers like Rafiq Ghazanvi and Tanveer Naqvi, the young singer was introduced to music directors and producers. Naushad Sb took a fancy to this young singer, and gave him his first singing assignment in the 1944 film ‘Pehle Aap’. The song was a soldier’s march – “Hindustan Ke Hum Hain, Hindustan Hamaara”, and was rendered as a chorus. Mohammed Rafi’s voice was one amongst a few others like Sham Kumar and Alauddin. In that sense, it was just a chorus representation for him.

The next break came to him, from music director Shyam Sunder again. In the film ‘Gaon Ki Gori’ aka ‘Village Girl’, from 1945, he got to sing a duet with GM Durrani – “Aji Dil Ho Qaboo Mein To Dildaar Ki Aisi Taisi”. Rafi Sb regarded this song as his actual debut as a singer in Hindi films.

For the letter ‘उ’, I present this philosophical song of encouragement and confidence building that exhorts the individual never to give up in the face of hardships and difficulties.  The film is ‘Vidyarthi’ from 1966. The lyrics are from the pen of Mahdukar Bihari. The music is composed by Babu Singh. As per the Geet Kosh listings, these two names appear only in two films, both from mid 1960s. Besides ‘Vidyarthi’, there is only one more film in which they worked – ‘Solah Singaar Karey Dulhaniya’, a Bhojpuri language film from 1965. Outside of these two films, both the lyricist and the music director do not seemed to have any other films to their name.

The list of actors as per Geet Kosh includes Surekha, Trideep, Sulochana, Sajjan, Helen, Daisy Irani, Geeta, Bhagwan Sinha, and a long list of names that do not seem very familiar. The name Surekha appears in a few more films, specifically as the lead actress in ‘Shehar Aur Sapna’ (1963) and ‘Aasmaan Mahal’ (1965). I am not able to locate the name Trideep in other films in that period. I request other readers and friends to add more information about the lead actors, the songwriter and the music director. In the video clip, I am guessing, on screen this song is performed by Trideep, and Surekha is the lady in closeup, who apparently seems in some perplexity and inner turmoil.

One more wonderful and exhilarating song, that really infuses enthusiasm, just by the sound of Rafi Sb’s voice and his emphatic rendering of the words of encouragement. Just listening to this song raises the levels of energy within. This song was heard quite often during the radio listening days, but seemed to have faded away later. But only for some time. Listen to it again and enjoy this resounding rendition.
