“Hamaari Baat”(1943) was a Bombay Talkies Production. It was directed by M I Dharmsey. The movie had Devika Rani, Jairaj, David, Shah Nawaz, Mumtaz Ali, Kamta Prasad, Raj Kapoor, Suraiyya etc in it.

Today (31 may 2013) is the tenth death anniversary of Anil Biswas (7 july 1922- 31 may 2003). Here is a special song on this occasion as a tribute to Anil Biswas. This song is written by Pt Narendra Sharma. Anil Biswas in the composer. The song is sung by Parul Ghosh and Anil Biswas. It must be one of the very few occasions when a brother sister pair have sung a duet in a Hindi movie.

“Baarood”(1960) was a Super Pictures Production. Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:

BAROOD-1960 was a super pictures film, produced and directed by Aspy Irani.
Aspy Irani was never tired of making films on identical stories of his own films, making a few changes in the cast, Scenes, names and situations,-the basic theme remaining a constant.

But his direction and pace of the film was such that he had created several admirers and a captive audience, who would see his films, whatever the name of the film. May be they got the pleasure of nostalgia of revising the earlier seen films.

I know atleast 2 fans of Aspy Irani’s films-one is Memsaab and the other is me !

BAROOD-1960 is yet again a story of a socially outcasted, low level poor soul, who is rich in his heart and deeds and his big hearted sacrificial adventures to save an innocent distraught child/girl/woman/man etc.

The story and screenplay is by C.J.Pavri and the dialogues are by Akhtar ul Iman.

In this case, Munna(Honey Irani) is an orphan, who runs away from his foster parents, who have adopted him from an orphanage run by Rekha Devi(Kumkum).
Munna is rescued by Shankar(Sheikh Mukhtar)-a kind hearted Truck Driver and both become thick friends. Later on Rekha devi discovers Munna and asks Shankar to return him to the orphanage as Shankar has no family.

Meanwhile Ramu(Hiralal) a clerk in the solicitor’s(Uma Dutt) office notices the resemblance between Munna and the lost son of a Millionaire. He starts his plan to prop up Munna as the lost son and earn money from the rich man.

The film details how Shankar and Rekha devi, along with Shankar’s friends save Munna and foil the attempts of Ramu to hold the child to ransom and make unlawful money.

There are plenty of fights and drama(courtesy of Sheikh Mukhtar) and songs and dances(courtesy of Kumkum) to make the film an entertaining one.
The loyal audience who came to the theatres got what they expected from Sheikh Mukhtar and Aspy Irani. PAISA VASOOL !

“Sachche Moti” (1962) was a Shri Dilip Chitra Production movie. It was directed by Om Bedi. The movie had Jabeen Jalil, Suresh, Sulochana, Manmohan Krishna, Jeevan, Moti, Madhu Apte etc in it.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from the movie. This song is sung by by Geeta Dutt. The song is picturised as a lullaby song. IN addition, the lyrics also seek to inculcate good values in the kid.

I am unable to identify the actors playing maa and beta in the picturisation. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist of this lesser known song. N Datta is the music director.

“Mere Lal” (1966) was an S S Chitra Mandir production. It was directed by Satyen Bose. The movie had Dev Kumar, Mala Sinha, Indrani Mukherjee, Ratan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Samson, Siddiqui, Mahesh, Jagdev etc in it.

Despite being a movie of rather “recent” vintage, little information seems to be available on internet about the story of this movie. Few people have heard of this movie though people have been heraing its songs without being aware that the songs are from “Mere Lal” (1966). For instance, the wonderful evergreen song Paayal ki jhankaar raste raste is from this movie.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. I became aware of this sweet song from “Mere Lal” (1966) just now when its lyrics were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt who also discovered this song only recently.

The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on a young boy called Mahesh Kumar who sings about the value of getting educated. The lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri are quite cute and lovely and they tell about the fact that eucation is necessary for people to be able to live honourably in the world.

The picturisation is interesting because it shows Mahesh Kumar singing this song to three of his pet animals- one monkey, one dog and one goat. I wonder what the story is all about. My guess is that Mahesh Kumar’s father is a madari and uses these animals for presenting road side tamashas. I am not aware of the story and I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us about the story of this movie.

Watching the picturisation of the song is a moving experience. I began to think about the pets. Human kids grow up and hope to lead respectable lives thanks to their education, but what future do these pets have once they grow up ? They are so utterly reliant on their human masters for their well being and how long can they expect to be with their owners is uncertain. And it is only the most fortunate of these pets that get to have masters who treat them humanely.

Here is this lovely song from this forgotten movie “Mere Lal” (1966).

Greetings all, on the 66th anniversary of the Independence Day of our nation.

Generations have passed since the day in 1947, when the declaration of India as a free nation was made. Endemic are the told and untold stories of sacrifices, of brave uprisings, of the heroic resistance against the British, and of martyrdoms, from around the subcontinent, that brought us this much desired freedom from an alien power. In parallel, also ubiquitous are the chronicles of political manipulations, the vested interests that subverted the national interest in favor of personal gains and honors, the ultimate ignominy of the division of the country that put to misery an astounding 20 million people, and the shameful acquiescence of the national leadership to the sycophantic whims of a foreign invader who had no business to make decisions about the political structure of this nation. But of course, the painful chronicles of history tell us that all this happened.

Traitors and the concept of treachery is as old as the human civilization itself. In any group of people, it is always possible to find one or a few, who would betray the rest for a personal advantage. Rare is any occasion that betrayal is not a part and parcel of the annals of any documented history, or even folklore for that matter. It is recorded history that when Alexander invaded India, there were small kingdoms and petty kings who gave safe passage and opened the gateways of this country to the Greek armies. The tales of Jaichand (12th century) and Mir Jaafar (18th century) need not be retold. These are legends and their names are now part of the common parlance – to be referred to as Jaichand or Mir Jaafar is to be branded a traitor.

The saga of the independence of India is rampant with side notes and unstated stories of manipulations and betrayals. The attack on Mysore and
the decimation of Tipu Sultan (1799), the ambush and consequent killing of Chandrashekhar Azad (1931), are stories that reek of treachery and
subversion for petty personal gains. The very mechanics of India becoming independent of the British rule, are dubious and questionable, looking at the disastrous consequences that this nation and its people had to suffer. And yet, there has not been a single question that has been asked about it in the past six and a half decades. There is ample documentary evidence available to rewrite this history.

And the history continues to repeat itself, over and over and over again. What was political treachery then, is now transformed into economic
betrayal, as is clearly evident from the current state of affairs of this nation. Having learnt some useful lessons, the foreign invaders have
rightfully steered clear of political domination. Understanding that there is more to be gained through an economic subversion, the looting and the pillaging of this country’s wealth continues even today, of course with the connivance of a hugely corrupted legislature and administration.

I wonder whether this song would have been worded any differently, had Kavi Pradeep been alive now and had written it in, say 2012. Written in 1958, when the newly independent nation was just a decade old, one is led to marvel at its prescient words and the prophetic message. A time that it was, and we all agree, when the people and the social interactions were simpler, the environment was not so stressful, the political leadership appeared to be inclined towards national interest, the agenda of nation building appeared to be clear and honest, the propaganda machines were almost non-existent, the newspapers, the journalist, the lawmakers and jurists were more honest and incisive, the focus on education was not adulterated with computer games and cell phones, and the evenings of the common man were not spent in front of the TV or at the shutters of late night wine shops.

Would you say that it was a time when honesty and personal integrity were characteristics that were still valued? The answer would probably be ‘yes’. The generation of people who had stood up for a common national cause, was still active in the society, and the atmosphere was still charged with a certain nationalism, that was simple and naïve.

And yet, we see, a foremost poet of his time, write down verses that warn of treacherous vested interests, that are internal to this nation and society. Vested interests against whom we must guard our national interests. Vested interests who are the hidden enemies of the state, who would not blink an eye before selling the national pride and interests down the river, for personal gains and comfort. A strange revelation that starts to well up in the mind – it was fifty five years ago, and the song is telling us about traitors we must guard against. In the current times, the situation has not changed. Rather, it has worsened, and very extremely so.

Worsened, I say, because of one singular comparison that can be highlighted right away. This song, in 1958, addressed the political leadership, and warned them too, of course assuming that they are on the side of the genuine national interest. In today’s scenario, this warning is going to be completely out of context, for the political leadership of all levels and colors is clearly on the opposite side of the national interest. What do I have to say.

The film is ‘Talaaq’ (1958). On screen one can see an energetic Rajendra Kumar singing this song of patriotic fervor to a public audience. The one special person present in the audience is Kamini Kadam, who seems to recognize the singer. Her initial reaction is a distant aloofness, but by the time song comes to an end, and the rest of the audience is up on their feet and joining the chorus, it is clear that she too is very much taken in and excited, not just by the song but also by the signer. We should realize that when this song was in the process of being filmed, Rajendra Kumar was just five or six years into the industry, so far a non lead material. ‘Mother India’ (1957) was his only notable feature so far albeit not as a hero, and his first real box office successes as a hero, ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnaai’ (1959) and ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ (1959) were still a year away.

As mentioned earlier, the song is written by Kavi Pradeep, and the music is composed by C Ramchandra. The singing voice is that of Manna Dey,
accompanied by a chorus of singers.

A song that says – things do not change much after all. Or rather to put it more precisely – the more things change, the more they remain the same. The sentences of this song talk of social ills that are as much a problem today as they were then, only more so. The number of such Jaichands and Mir Jaafars has just multiplied astronomically. This call, for being cautious and prepared against internal traitors – this call rings true even today.

It is a sad commentary that the number of people to whom this call may be meaningful, has shrunk drastically over the years.

Greetings for the 66th. Awaiting 67th, across a barren and depressing horizon.

Today I found one of my colleague taking printouts of what looked like a chapter on thermodynamics, looking quite serious. On my query, he explained that his Engineering college going daughter has ordered him to prepare her presentation on thermodynamics. You will face this situation a few years from now, he told me.

Well, what does he know. I told him that I face this kind of situation not only from my school going daughter but from my non school going (but working) wife even today. My wife makes me draft her letters to her superiors, which is a tall order because it takes me considerable time to make sense of what it is that she wants me to write. And when we are together during vacations, she sometimes gives me some thick medical book and asks me to study some chapter from it which I am then supposed to explain to her when she is back from her shopping.

My daughter phoned me this evening and ordered me to prepare a speech for her debate which is to take place tomorrow. She has to speak in favour of the statement that “Peer pressure is beneficial for us”. She gave me the deadline of 8 PM to write an article on this topic.

She phoned me again at 7-30 PM enquiring whether the article was ready. I told her that I would give her some points and she should expand on them in her own words. No, I am extremely busy and I have no time for that, she stated. I wondered how she could be so busy that she had deputed the preparation of her debate topic to one of her parents.

I wondered if I too should depute this task to one of my article contributors. :) This was a task that I needed to do myself of course. So I sat down in front of a computer and started typing out a few ideas that occured to me. I also searched online and found that this item- a standard topic for Kendriya Vidyalaya students all over India was being discussed. I quickly took some ideas from that discussion too. It took me about an hour to prepare a write up that sounded satisfactory enough. I then e mailed it so she may be able to go through it and learn it (by rote, most probably) for tomorrow. :)

At young age in school when we learn about the freedom movement and freedom fighters we are easily inspired by Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh because their life had struggle, thrill, passion and action. They did all this for the people, for the nation, for us who are now enjoying the freedom that they helped achieve for us.

Still, at that young age when we are growing up, we are not fully equipped to imagine and appreciate the extent of the struggles, sacrifices and hardships that they went through and the odds that they were up against at that time.

As we grow up and become mature, we also understand that the sacrifice made by Mahatma Gandhi was no less. We cannot even try to do what he practised all his life.

In spite of the ideological differences between them, they all fought for freedom and to free the country from the Britishers. And the sacrifice made by them can never be forgotten.

Today we remember Sardar Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary (28 september 1907-23 march 1931). We remember him for his bravery and for the supreme sacrifice that he made for the nation. He has been a source of inspiration for many years now and will remain an inspiration in times to come too.

Subhash Chandra Bose said “Bhagat Singh had become the symbol of the new awakening among the youths …”
Today we need more awakened youths who would fight against the lacunae in our system, fight against corruption in our country, and fight for the poor, child and women in our society to make India a strong and better country in the future.

When he was hanged to death Bhagat Singh’s age was only 23 years, 05 months, and 25 days.

It was Bhagat Singh, who, to avoid his marriage had written that “My life has been dedicated to the noblest cause, that of the freedom of the country. Therefore, there is no rest or worldly desire that can lure me now.” It was his determination, devotion, courage and an undying patriotic spirit to carry the mission he dreamt of.

The song I have chosen for this occasion is a song which gives a ‘wake-up’ call, and we all, time to time, need this call. Because we are very busy in our day to day life and even if we are at all ‘socially conscious’ we cannot participate to collectively express our anguish or outrage. Though some time there are protests and agitations which try to shake up our ‘sleeping souls’ but that is not enough to culminate the anger into a big revolt.

The song under discussion featured in as many as three films (which I know and have watched) made on Bhagat Singh ‘Shaheed -1965’, ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh-2002’ and ‘23rd March 1931: Shaheed-2002’.

As the film ‘23rd March 1931: Shaheed’ (2002) was based on the 1965 ‘Shaheed’, so in both films this song is shown happening at a village function where Sardar Ajit Singh sings it , whereas in the film ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, it is shown happening at the annual cultural function at the college and there Bhagat Singh is shown performing this song.

However I select this one from the 1965 Shaheed as it is sung by Rafi Saab.

This is the song which has been originated by Shri.Ajit Singh , uncle of Bhagat Singh, and I think then it was a source of inspiration for many including Bhagat Singh. When I searched for additional information I got to know that there was in fact a movement itself which was called as ‘Pagdi Sambhaal Jattaa Movement’ and an article about this movement titled as ‘Sardar Ajit Singh: Hero of the ‘Pagdi Sambhal Jatta’ Movement’. It is mentioned in this article that : ‘In a mammoth rally at Lyallpur on 3 rd March 1907, Banke Dayal, the editor of the newspaper, Jhang Syal, introduced his song, “Pagdi sambhal Jatta, Pagdi Sambhal oye”. Such was the popularity of the song that it soon became the very symbol and soul of the movement. So much so that the movement itself came to be called the Pagadi sambhaal Jattaa movement. ”

The song itself continued to be relevant even in the present social conditions of our country. The ‘common man’ is still suffering and issues like corruption, atrocities on women and children, upliftment of the downtrodden, the poor, farmers’ suicide, lack of basic amenities are seen even today.

Our freedom fighters fought for freedom from the British rulers, but the India that they dreamt about has not yet been achieved and so freedom struggle against the present conditions in the country is still required to be waged and won.

“Aradhana” (1969) is a movie that needs no introduction. This movie was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Farida Jalal, Sujit Kumar, Pahari Sanyal, Anita Dutt, Ahi Bhattacharya, Madan Puri, Asit Sen, Manmohan, Master Shahid, C. S. Dubey, Subhash Ghai etc in it.

The music of this movie was easily the music of the year, though it does not appear so in Binaca Geetmala, because the songs of this movie did not have the opportunity to play sufficient number of times in that year’s weekly programmes.

The blockbuster song Mere sapnon ki raani kab aayegi tu , which was easily the most popular song of those days finished only 14th in Binaca geetmala finals of 1969 and Kora kaaghaz thhaa ye man mera was 32nd. Other songs of the movie did not make it to the finals.

The movie did better at the Filmfare award. The movie won the best Film award. Though “Aradhana”(1969) lost out to “Jeene Ki Raah” (1969) for th best music award, Roop tera mastaana won the Filmfare best male playback singer award for Kishore Kumar.

National Awards, which are given by Government of India, also recognised the music of “Aradhana” (1969). Another song of “Aradhana” won the national award for best maleplayback singing. Unlike Filmfare awards, National awards are given for movies in all Indian languages. So in effect, a male playback singer of “Aradhana”(1969) was adjusted as the best male playback singer in all Indian movies in 1969 and not just Hindi movies.

Who was this male playback singer ? It was not Kishore Kumar, and it was not Rafi. It was S D Burman who won the national award for best male playback singing !

The song was the title song of the movie, viz.” kaahe ko roye…safal hogi teri Aradhana”.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Very little is known about “Andhera” (1943). From the little information available, it seems that the movie had Sitara Devi, Arun Kumar, Kesari, Rajkumari, K C Dey etc in it.

I just came across a song from this movie. This song is sung by K C Dey. Seeing that he acted in this movie, it is clear taht the song was picturised on him as well.

When I posted the article about this song, then I soon enough realised that this song was already discussed in the past ! This happens with me sometimes, and then I have to delete the newly posted duplicate article and replace it with another article, preferably for about a song from the same movie.

As it turns out, I came across another K C Dey song from the same movie. What is more, this song was from the same genre. It was even more rare as it was not even available on YT.

Other details remained the same. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Gyan Dutt.

I have not been able to get the lyrics right at a few places. I request our readers with keener ears to point our the missing/ correct words in the lyrics.

Today we remember one of the fiercest revolutionaries of our country during the freedom struggle, viz. Chandra Shekhar Azad (23 July 1906 – 27 February 1931).

Born as Chandra Shekhar Tiwari in the Bhawra village of Alirajpur district (then Central India Agency and now Madhya Pradesh) he assumed the name as ‘Azad’ (The liberated), after his arrest by Britishers during the non-cooperation movement in 1921 and he had to undergo fifteen days’ rigorous imprisonment for it.

He was considered the mentor of Bhagat Singh. He was also instrumental in reorganizing the Hindustan Republican Association under a new name ‘Hindustan Socialist Republic Association’ after the death of its founder Ram Prasad Bismil and he is also considered the Chief Strategist of it.

On this day in 1931 Chandra Shekhar Azad shot himself, when he was surrounded by British Policemen at Alfred Park Allahabad, now known as ‘Chandra Shekhar Azad Park’.

He was only 24 years old then.

I will keep today’s post brief and I will hold back the detailed discussion on Chandrashekhar Azad for a future post.

Our film makers have time to time produced films on our National heroes, freedom fighters, freedom movement and revolutionaries. And, on our blog also remember the great heroes and discuss movies /songs from films made on these great persons who sacrifice their present for the sake of the future of the nation. We owe our freedom to these great souls and it is our duty to remember them, pay our heartfelt tributes to them and feel grateful for their supreme sacrifices that they made for the sake of the country and its people.

We are all aware that Chandra Shekhar Azad’s character has also been included in all the films made on the life of Bhagat Singh. Starting from Manoj Kumar’s 1965 film ‘Shaheed’ where Man Mohan played the role, every Bhagat Singh film has featured the character of Azad. Sunny Deol portrayed Azad in the movie ‘23rd March 1931- Shaheed’. In the movie ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ starring Ajay Devgan, Azad was portrayed by Akhilendra Mishra (these three being the most popular films made on the life of Bhagat Singh).

The lives of Azad, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Bismil and Ashfaq were depicted in the 2006 film – “Rang De Basanti” with Amir Khan portraying Azad. The movie, which draws parallels between the lives of young revolutionaries such as Azad and Bhagat Singh, and today’s youth, also dwells upon the lack of appreciation among today’s Indian youth for the sacrifices made by these men.

Today, I take this opportunity to introduce this 1963 Film ‘Chandra Shekhar Azad’.

I came across two songs from this film a few months backs and I shared them with Atul ji. I had no detailed information about this film at that time. However I came across this video clip a few weeks ago during my routine search for songs online. This video includes the title of this film. From this video it is clear that JAIRAJ played the role of Chandra Shekhar Azad in this film.

This film was produced by Mrs. Mallika Kwatra and N.S.Kwatra. Its star cast includes Nirupa Roy, Jairaj, Tun Tun, Indira Bansal, Indira Billi, Leela Mishra, Bhagwan Sinha, Jagdish Gautam, Haroon, Kabuli and Majnu. Its story and dialogues were written by Jagdish Gautam. Lyrics are by Prem Dhawan and music composed by Sardul Kwatra and Bhagwant Kwatra. This film was directed by Jagdish Gautam.

Today being 8th march every where we are bombarded with Happy Woman’s day messages. All the radio channels are playing woman power songs. Just heard some news channel tell that Mumbai police has launched some special service to help women in distress. But I don’t know why we don’t hear these things on other non special days. But kya Karen we are like that only. We wish our mothers on mother’s day and take her for granted on the other days. We might even forget to wish her good morning and start bombarding her with all the Why questions….. Why you didn’t wake me up? Why you didn’t keep my dress ironed? (Some examples, I am sure there will be more serious queries as well as there will be exceptions to the rule wherein the kids will be super- independent). Similarly on other days the father will be an ATM machine but on Father’s day he will get a nice gift (probably bought from the pocket money he gives). But chalta hai. Life is like that and we accept and expect it to be like that.

So the song which I heard first in the morning on vividh bharati was from “Aakhir Kyon?” (1985). That movie had a very topical theme of a wife (Smita Patil) being abandoned by her whimsical husband (Rakesh Roshan) for another girl (Tina Munim). The story goes on to show Smita becoming a TV anchor (she was one prior to coming into movies) and then graduating to a Novelist. Then it turns out that when her husband’s business falls in bad times he approaches her; requests her to write for him; so that he can get their daughter (whom had forcibly kept with himself at the time of separation) married decently. That is the gist of the movie. We also had a partly bald Rajesh Khanna playing a TV (DoorDarshan) cameraman who admires Smita for her rebounding power and is a support to her throughout.

This movie came at a time when DD was the only channel available and people used to have one TV in their drawing rooms. And whole families used to sit and watch whatever was dished out to them. Otherwise I cannot imagine an entire family sitting and watching this kind of a musical show on TV these days. Also those were the days when people used to quote Rani Jhansi in all their speeches (don’t miss the photo of Rani Jhansi shown during the song.) also Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher were sources of inspiration. (they also appear in the picturisation of the song)

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle to music composed by Rajesh Roshan for Indivar’s lyrics.

“Saugandh”(1961) was directed by G K Ramu for Hariharan Films, Madras. The movie had Anjali Devi, Gemini Ganeshan, M. N. Nambiar, P. S. Veerappa, M. N. Rajam, Kamala Laxman, M. Saroja, P. S. Venkatachalam etc in it. From the cast, it looks like a South Indian movie dubbed in Hindi and its original songs translated and recorded in Hindi.

Here is a song from “Saugandh” (1961). This song is sung by Rafi. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dilip Dholakiya.

” Haazir so Vazir ” and ” Out of sight is out of mind ” are two well known proverbs which describe the Hindi film industry. Those who are in the limelight- for whatever reasons- are the talk of the town. Those who are not heard about, seen or spoken about are not remembered, whatever their contribution to the industry. This is the experience of of almost every film personality who retired and spent time away from the industry till their end.

Examples are many- Shamshad Begum, Mubarak Begum, Begum Para, Rajesh Khanna, Sitara Devi, Nimmi, Nanda, Waheeda, Asha Parekh, G M Durrani, Sajjad Hussain, K. Datta, Jagmohan Sursagar, Manna Dey, Kavi Pradeep….so on and so forth.

One more name is that of Talat Mehmood. When he was in full form and sang hit songs, people would jostle to have his glimpse, but after he retired ( or was ignored ) from film singing, he was not only forgotten, but many rumours of how he was living in poverty were making rounds. Of course that was NOT the truth.

Shri Rajnikumar Pandya ji,a senior writer on film personalities and author of several books, who has won Sahitya Academy awards FIVE times, had gone to interview Talat Mehmood in the late 90s.

After finishing the interview, he was coming out of the posh 7 storied ” Sunbeam” apartments, when he met one of his younger friends. He asked, “Came to meet Rati Agnihotri ? “

Pandya ji was shocked. He had never dreamt anything like this. He simply said, ” No No, I came to meet a great personality. “

” What,some other great person also stays here ? Who ? “

“Talat Mehmood “.

Even after hearing the name, the friend’s face showed no signs of recognition.

Disgusted, Pandya ji said, ” Look here. Some time ago this was a beautiful Bungalow Sunbeam, belonging to Talat Mehmood. It was sold and this tower has come up. Rati stays in one of the flats, but Talat owns the Pent House on the 7th floor. “

The friend said,” but does he stay here ? I had heard that he is forced to do some small service somewhere.”

Irritatedly, Pandya ji said, ” Do you see this big car ? It is Talat’s car. He stays in his Pent House. Every month he has 2-3 stage shows, plus Radio and HMV Royalties come every month. His income every month is in Thousands. These are great people. Look at Rafi’s bungalow there. Now it has become a shopping centre,. Do you think they are on roads ? “

Friend said, “But I had read somewhere that Rafi’s wife does Tailoring jobs for survival. “

Just imagine Pandya ji’s condition. With great restraint, he said coolly, “This is how rumours spread. Rafi family’s income must be more than Talat Mehmood’s income. Rafi’s children are in USA. Why will Rafi’s wife do menial jobs ? They are very well off. “

But then it is not the fault of this one man alone. It is true that most actors and singers of the first generation of HFM died in penury and poverty, but the subsequent generations became more money savvy. They knew that film line life is for few years only and they made provisions for their retired life. These days career periods have shortened even further, due to heavy output of actors and singers. These days artistes last for a few years only and they wisely make provisions for their lives and are secure enough.

Talat Mehmood was born on 24-2-1924. His father owned an Electrical goods shop. BY the age of 15 , he was halfway into his school and music education. he entered A.I.R. and on 8-12-1939,h is first song was aired on Radio,for which he got sixteen rupees eight annas as fees. He continued singing on Radio ,till the ” Talent Search Team ” of HMV identified him, took him to Calcutta and he cut two records. The first song was, “Sab din ek samaan” and the second was ” Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi “. This song became popular all over Inbdia. This was in 1941.

He came back to Lucknow. Here he met Madan Mohan a young man working on A.I.R. Madan Mohan was Raibahadur Chunilal’s son. Raibahadur Chunilal was the chief of Filmistan in Bombay. Both together started ” Amateur music Club” in Lucknow. In 1944, Talat went back to Calcutta. He worked in 3 Hindi films- Rajlaxmi-1945, Tum aur main-47 and Samapti-49. He had also done one Bangla film under the name of Tapan kumar Sinha.

In 1949, Talat came down to Bombay. He sang his first Hindi song- teri gali se-in film Raakhi-1949, under Husnalal Bhagatram. Then came the big break. Anil Biswas gave him a song from Arzoo-1950 “Ae dil mujhe”. This became a hit song and Talat got a firm foothold in Bombay.

Mukesh and Talat were great friends. When Mukesh was not getting work, it was Talat who pleaded with Salil Chaudhari and got Mukesh a song in Madhumati-58. This changed the life of Mukesh. Around 58-60, many rumours about Talat’s arrogant behaviour, his spat with Naushad etc were circulating. Not everything was true, however. He lost songs of Yahudi, but the Sujata song came his way, only due to Asha Bhonsle’s insistence with Burman da. Actually rumours and misunderstandings are a part of an artiste’s career.

It is to the credit of Anil Biswas that he gave Talat’s self confidence about his own special Voice feature, (the tremor in his voice) and that proved to be his strength and USP too. The ‘ Vibrato ‘ or the ” LARGISH “- technical name for the vibrations in Talat’s voice ( Kampan-yukt ), actually became Talat’s treasure.

After Film songs stopped coming his way, Talat continued cutting private Albums and making stage shows in India and foreign countries.

Today we will have the pleasure of listening to a song of Talat from his debut Hindi Film- Rajlaxmi-1945. The lead pair of this film was Kanan Devi and Chhabi Vishwas. Talat was given the role of a Sadhu who sings ” Jago Musafir jago “. There were just 7 songs in the film, composed by Robin Chatterjee and Dhiren Mitra. There was only ONE song of Talat in this film. There is mention of one more Talat Mehmood song, viz. ” Tu sun le matwale”, in the HFGK and elsewhere but this information is NOT TRUE. It was a private song of Talat. This misunderstanding developed just because this song is on the reverse side of the record of ‘jago Musafir’( Record No- N-16688 ). This error was found out after HFGK was published.

This Talat song is a song of historical value because it is his DEBUT song in Hindi films.

“Maasoom” (1960) was directed by Satyen Bose for Bani Roop Chitra. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Sarosh Irani, Aziz, Honey Irani, Anuva Gupta, Manmohan Krishna, Mohan Choti, Chaman Puri, Bhagwan Sinha, Keshto Mukherjee, Master Nissar, Jeevankala, Gautam, Bir Sakuja etc in it.

This movie was made on the topic of children and it had some nice songs in it. One song from the movie, viz. Naani teri morni ko mor le gaye has gone on to become a timeless classic.

This movie itself was a heartwarming movie that won the hearts of the movie goers. The movie was nominated for the best film category. It did not win that award, but won the Filmfare award for best story (for Ruby Sen).

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from the movie. The song is sung by Sudha Malhotra and it is picturised on Sarosh Irani, a young kid who is seen earning an honest living by acting as a coolie. It must be kept in mind that the concepts of political correctness in day to day lives of people had yet to take root. What is depicted in this song will be considered child labour today which has been outlawed now but such concepts were not known there those days. Even otherwise, one cannot say that child labour has been abolished. Children from underprivileged and deprived backgrouns have to labour hard even today, notwithstanding laws against child labour.

This song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi and the lyrics of the song talks of the glory of earning an honest living through one’s own hands instead of resorting to unlawful acts. Our hards are our fate and we would rather earn our living through them than to beg for alms- this is the lesson of self respect that this song conveys.

Today (1 may 2014) happens to be Workers’ day or Labour day. Though this day is ordinarily considered a day for workers belonging to organiser labour organisations and excluded unorganised labour and also mangement, I do not think one should take such a narrow view of Workers’ dayin today’s circumstances. Everyone who is engaged in any activity, whether manual or non manual activity is working, and all of them must be considered as workers.

I will not call this song a Workers’ day song. This is an inspiration song and a song with a message that is valid on all days of the year and not just on one particular date of the year. And as mentioned earlier, this song is meant for all individuals, and not just for organised labour.

“Guru Ghantaal” (1956) was directed by S M Yusuf for V K Pictures. Little information is available online on this movie except in this blog where our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh has provided lots of details on this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:

GURU GHANTAL-1956 was a V K pictures film produced by R N Sharma and N K Kaushik. Directed by the veteran S M Yusuf, the film had music by Lachhiram Tamar.

Film Guru Ghantal had 9 songs. These 9 songs were written by 4 Lyricists. The cast of the film was Motilal, Sheila Ramani, Usha Kiron, Jagdev, Ajit, Agha, Sunder, Mirza Musharraf, Sheikh, Kesari etc .

The film was based on incidents found in day to day life. Open any Newspaper and you will find advertisements for some BABAs, Bengali, Kashmiri and other varieties, Siddha Purushas, Gurus and Saints. They all claim ready solutions for all difficulties in this world. Innocent, foolish and gullible people fall prey to them and spend money unlimited.

Rukmini Devi, wife of rich Carnival owner Raja Shyamdas has no children. Instead of going to a Doctor, she seeks all types of Babas,Gurus and saints. So much money is spent on them that Shyamdas had to stop studies and call back his Niece Leela from Bombay back to Khandala. Leela’s lover Ram, a jobless young man thinks of a plan to teach a lesson to Rukmini Devi and gives an ad in papers that Saints Sachitanand and Parmanand ji have great power to solve any problem.

Leela’s brother Raja Ramdas sees this ad and is sent by Rukmini Devi to fetch them to Khandala. He goes to Bombay and meets Ram, who tells him his plan and Ramdas agrees to help him. Ramdas,while in Bombay falls in love with a CID girl-Kanan, who is after these fake Gurus and Babas to expose them.

Ram becomes Sachitanand,his fried is Parmanand. they all come to Khandala. While Ral and Leela and Ramdas and Kanan pairs are busy in singing and running around trees in Khandala,all the Jewellery of Rukmini devi is stolen.

Investigations start and it is found that there is another thief who is taking advantage of all this situation. Kanan and Ramdas catch the thief Red handed while selling the jewellery. Ram and Ramdas reveal everything. Rukmini Devi learns a lesson for her life and agrees to visit a doctor for treatment.

While Ram-leela and Ramdas-kanan get married,the news that Rukmini devi is pregnant comes and everyone is happy.

Today is the 15th of August 2014.

Indians all over the world will be celebrating this day as their Independence Day.

And yes, it is an occasion to celebrate. For, 67 years ago, India, after a long freedom struggle, achieved independence from colonial rule. Indians are now, politically, masters of their own fate – they are not subjects of any other sovereign power.

While there will be celebrations, from flag hoisting to March Pasts, this is also an occasion for introspection and reflection.

In our daily lives, time goes by so quickly that we rarely seem to get time to introspect and reflect. Every day feels like a blur, with the sole purpose of linking yesterday with tomorrow. For many Indians, their daily life is so full of challenges that they hardly have time to look beyond their own personal lives. They are often just overwhelmed by their circumstances.

Yet it is very important to reflect. Not just on one’s own life but also on a bigger picture – the world that one is living in. Or, narrowing it down a bit, at least the society one is living in.

A day like Independence Day is ideal for such reflection because it marks an important event in one’s nation’s history. At least on that day, we can find the time to reflect on the state of the nation, and see how we can work towards bettering the future for the nation and its people.

Like many others, I too have my own take on the state of the nation. On its issues, on possible solutions to these issues.

But I realize that this is, first and foremost, a song blog. Where people come primarily to listen to songs and to read about them. This is not the right platform to write lengthy pieces on topics like the state of the nation and solutions to its ills. In any case, one could write a book on this – and, in fact, many have been written by people far more competent to do so, than me.

So I will try to keep this relatively brief – while still not losing sight of the fact that it IS Independence Day, after all.

On this occasion, last year too, I had written a reflective post. I’ve just dug it out, here it is http://atulsongaday.me/2013/08/15/is-waaste-pandrah-august-hai-hamen-pyaara/ .

This post talked about the sacrifices made by the Founding Fathers of the nation just to see an independent India. It talked about how we somehow seemed to have lost our way over the years, how a sense of frustration has crept into our mindset as a result of a deep distrust for the political system and the institutions that are the hallmark of a democracy. In that post, I had also tried to strike a positive note, saying that it is not all doom and gloom. That, inspite of everything, we are still a vibrant democracy.

And, as I reflect for 2014, I continue on that positive note this year too.

Yes, there are still many issues facing India. The cynics and skeptics, buried as they often are in daily alarmist reports of crime, inflation, corruption and every form of bad news, are not likely to buy any positive stories, dismissing them as nothing but spin.

But, while accepting that all of this is happening and is true (I am not living in denial), I do think things can get better. Will they? Depends.

On us.

Yes, note that I am not saying “the government”. I am saying “us”. All of us – and that includes the government. Because the government is a construct that has been created by us. And consists of people just like you and me. I.e “us”.

This is very important to realize because we are very used to blaming the government for most of our ills. And yes, it has often failed the people.

But have the people done their duty as citizens of the country? When John F. Kennedy, in his inaugural address as US President in 1961, told the Americans “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” he had a very valid point.

The citizens of a country have a duty towards their country as much as they have rights as citizens. While many of these are defined in the Constitution, even the Constitution should not be seen as limiting one’s duties. You don’t have to have everything defined in black-and-white always.

Today’s Indians are in a much better position to do good for their country, than Indians of previous generations. As India has developed, every generation has become more affluent compared to the previous one. While many in earlier generations had a hand-to-mouth existence, depending on support from the government, today’s Indians, many of them also much better educated than their predecessors, are in a much better position to give back to their country.

Do they? Or do they only have a sense of entitlement, where they take from the country, but don’t care to give back to it?

A country is nothing without its people. NOTHING. Yes, it may be land and sea. Mountains and valleys. But all of this means nothing without the people inhabiting that land. They make the country what it is.

If we look around, we see the US, Germany, Japan as developed countries. How did they get to where they are? It is mainly because of their people. Yes, of course the governments played their role – but the governments were elected by the people.

Nation-building, just like building an individual’s life, is hard work. One can dream – but that dream has to be backed by a lot of hard work and unflinching focus if it has to be realized.

Again, that comes down to the people. Do they have the required work ethic?

In addition to sheer developmental issues, India has a whole lot of other issues.

Like preserving its pluralism. No country in the world probably has as big a challenge as India has in this respect, given its sheer population.

Again, this comes down to the people. Do they have the inclusive mindset to allow for those of a different faith or belief system to co-exist and flourish? A “live and let live” approach?

Then there is the issue of injustice. However much India might develop economically, it means little if the society in which Indians live does not seek to provide justice (even if there is a mechanism on paper) to each and every individual in the system.

Again, this comes down to the people. Do they believe in fairness? In equal-opportunity? Or are they purely selfish, seeking to leverage every opportunity to exploit the less-advantaged?

There are many more issues – but I will stop here because this post has already become way too long. And I haven’t even come to the song part of it.

Let me just close this by saying, as we reflect, we need to realize that it is upto the people of India to bring about whatever change they want to see in their country and in society. In a democracy, the people cannot just blame the government for everthing. In a dictatorship, yes. But not in a democracy.

So it is time Indians stepped up and took ownership of their country.

Time they behaved like responsible citizens, thinking about their DUTY towards their country too, and not just about their rights.

Time they realized that dreaming is easy, but realizing a dream calls for a lot of hard work and focus.

Time they realized that economic growth is all fine but there can be no compromise on, or damage to, India’s pluralistic fabric.

Time they realized that economic growth is all fine but a society steeped in injustice is hardly a society one can be proud of. On the contrary, it is one to be ashamed of.

Time they realized that independence of a nation is incomplete without independence of every individual of that nation. For, the nation is just a collective. It is the people that make a nation, not the other way round.

Ok, I think that’s enough reflection for now. Like I said earlier, one could write a book on this. (I think Atul will start defining word-limits for posts from now on, if I keep going like this. :-) )

Coming to the song for today, it is a wonderful song for the occasion.

Sung by Asha Bhosle (lip-synched by Mala Sinha), written by Sahir, composed by Ravi, this is an inspirational song that exhorts children to imbibe certain values that will help them build a stronger nation. Mala Sinha is teaching a bunch of kids these values in the form of a song.

And what are these values?

Hard work. Helping others. Respecting all faiths. Respecting their books (education). Asking them to learn for themselves, and also to teach others. Bring light to remove darkness from this world. To build friendships. To avoid having enemies. To fight injustice of “oonch”/”neech”.

Sahir’s lyrics are simple but powerful, as usual. You wouldn’t expect any less from Sahir.

As I listened to this song today and noted down the lyrics, I could not help feeling that it would be very useful if today’s children learnt this song in primary school. This song does not promote any religious text or anything of the sort. (It should therefore be non-controversial). It talks only of values. That is what I like most about it.

Another thing that struck me is that the children are all just sitting in the open under a tree. No fancy buildings or infrastructure. Also, Mala Sinha comes across as a very dedicated teacher here, who seems to enjoy interacting with the kids.

This is another thing today’s schools could learn from. Finally what matters is WHAT children learn. And that is a function of the content and HOW it is delivered (quality of teacher).
